When it comes to writer and author headshots, most people picture a simple, polished portrait with a smile. And yes, there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you’re building a personal brand, launching a book, or simply showing up more online, your photos can—and should—go deeper.

A professional headshot is just the starting point—great photos capture your creative spark
Whether your tone is bold, introspective, romantic, or quirky, the right headshot sets the stage for how your audience connects with you. It’s not just about what you look like. It’s about how people feel when they see your photo.

Why writer and author headshots need to reflect more than professionalism
In a recent branding mini-session at The Gallery Studio in Calgary, I worked with Asya, a local writer, who was preparing to share her voice publicly in a bigger way. She came into the session knowing she wanted to look confident and put-together, but also wanted photos that felt layered and expressive—images that captured her energy as a writer.
This is where the process starts to feel more intentional than a regular headshot session.

Brand photos start with purpose: the power of the intake questionnaire
Every brand photo client I work with receives a detailed intake questionnaire before their session. But it’s not just a form—it’s a creative tool. One of the most important questions I ask is: “How do you want people to feel when they look at your photos?”
Her answer? Intrigued and interested. That small but powerful detail guided everything from her expressions to posing, wardrobe, and final image selection.
When I know how you want to be seen—and where these photos are going (LinkedIn, Instagram, a future book jacket)—I can shape the session around your goals. That’s the real heart of branding photography. It’s not about the photographer expressing their style. It’s about supporting the client’s vision, purpose, and presence.

A mix of moods to match your many roles
During this session, we created a variety of looks: some more classic and professional for LinkedIn, and others with a storytelling vibe—moody, confident, feminine, and quietly bold. Each image was designed to work hard for her in different areas of her life and business.
If you’re an author or writer in Calgary, don’t settle for a photo that just checks a box. Your headshot should reflect who you are and where you’re going.
